The winners for the Ilm Day Awards 2010 GCSE category are:
Platinum Award     Zakaria Djoudi

Rt. Hon. Sadiq Khan MP presenting the GCSE Platinum Award to Zakaria Djoudi.
Zakaria attended Whitchurch High School in Cardiff where he achieved 12A*s in English, Maths, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, History, RE, Modern Foreign Language, Design & Technology, English Literature, Arabic and Welsh and 2As in Sociology and Media Studies.

Zakaria has won numerous awards including a poster competition for ‘Show Racism the Red Card’, and the ‘Young Playwright’s Festival’. Additionally Zakaria has been selected to attend a 10-week ‘Mathematics Masterclasses for Young People’ run by The Royal Institution of Great Britain. In his spare time Zakaria enjoys football and karate in which he holds two black belts and has been awarded many trophies and medals. Other extra curricular activities Zakaria takes part in include Explorer Scouts & Cubs where he is a Young Leader and volunteering for charities.

Gold Award     Mohammed Naeem Iqbal

Naeem is currently undertaking AS Levels at the Royal Grammar School, High Wycombe. He attained 12 A*’s at GCSE in English, Maths, Science, History, RE, Modern foreign Languages, English Literature, English Language, Chemistry, Biology, Physics, French, German, Urdu and Design Technology, including full marks in both English Literature and Religious Studies, and close to full marks in the majority of the other subjects. Helping run a weekly mentor-scheme at his school and volunteering at a local hospice regularly.

Naeem has also written articles for magazines such as the British Medical Journal. However, he considers one of his greatest achievements to be that of rowing, last year ranking 5th in Great Britain and now aspiring to be selected to row for Team GB at the European Championships 2010. He is currently studying Maths, Chemistry, Biology, English Literature and Further Maths at AS-Levels, his dream being to study medicine at Oxford.
Silver Award     Zahrah Madiha Hussain

A student at Dixons City Academy, Bradford, 17 year-old Zahrah acquired 12 A*’s in English, Maths, Science, History, Geography, Textiles, RE, ICT, Modern Foreign Languages, Biology, Physics & Media and 2 A’s in Further Maths (highest grade possible) and Chemistry.

A passionate martial artist who thoroughly enjoys Jiu Jitsu, she has also been involved in voluntary charity work in Bradford during her weekends. Recently returning from the four-day Medlink Conference at Nottingham University, her aim in life is to be a Neurosurgeon and to be a positive Muslim role model for young people around the world.
Bronze Award     Tahmidah Kalam

Currently studying AS Level Mathematics, Biology, Geography and Economics at St Marylebone School, London, Tahmidah achieved 9 A*’s in English Literature, English Language, Maths, Science, Food Technology, PE, and RE and 1 A in Statistics in a wide range of subjects.

In recognition of 17 year old Tahmidah’s efforts, her Duke of Edinburgh project, the undertaking of a photography project in conjunction with Adobe, her work was placed on display at the Design Museum. Having served on the Pupil Advisory Board for the Sorrell Foundation (Building Schools for the Future), she is a volunteer in an interpreting programme as well as currently fundraising for a charity which strives to enhance the lives of children in India.
A special congratulations to the runners-up for the GCSE category, whose hard-work, fine achievements and immense dedication earns them special recognition.

Having achieved 11A*s in English, Maths, Science, History, Geography, Modern Foreign Languages, English Literature, Additional Sciences, Statistics, Business Studies, Religious Studies and an A in ICT at GCSE from Bentley Wood High School in Harrow, Hana aspires to helping other people in society. She looks forward to being a Psychiatrist to help contribute to society’s welfare.
Faisal Moughal

16 year old Faisal Moughal achieved 10 A*’s in Maths, Geography, Graphics, RE, ICT, French, Business Studies, Chemistry, Physics and English Literature and 2 A’s in Biology and English Language at GCSE from Queen Elizabeth’s Boys School in Barnet.

He received a Gold Certificate in the ‘UK Intermediate Mathematical Challenge’, being in the top 6% nationally. Faisal is also a keen sportsman who has represented his school in both Rugby and Cricket and enjoys tennis and swimming in his spare time. A student of Islamic studies & Arabic during the weekends, he has also been active in charity, raising money for survivors of the Pakistan earthquake and a local community appeal for Gaza.

Faisal is currently studying A Levels in Maths, Chemistry, Biology, Geography and Critical Thinking.
The winners for the Ilm Day Awards 2010 A-Level category are:
Platinum Award     Musleh Uddin

Rt. Hon. Stephen Timms MP presenting the A-Level Platinum Award to Musleh Uddin.
Musleh is a first-year student reading Law at Cambridge University. At AS Level, he achieved 4 A’s in English, Law, Politics and Psychology, receiving the highest AS mark in the country in both Law and Politics respectively. He sat his GCSE’s at Darul Hadis Latifiah, East London where he successful worked towards 2A*’s and 8 A grades in addition to completing hifdh of the Qur’an. He had led Taraweeh prayers every year since the age of 13 and is a fully-qualified Qaari’.

Musleh has been heavily involved in the launching of the UK chapter of a charity which operates over 40 medical centres in Bangladesh. He has also organised a number of events for youngsters like him, such as the KYD Football Tournament as well as the Hertfordshire Young Mariner’s Base Camping Trip. He aspires to one day enter Law and practice in the field of Human Rights.
Gold Award     Raihazah Malek

Karen Buck MP presenting the A-Level Gold Award to Raihazah Malek.
Presently reading Natural Sciences at Cambridge University, Raihazah gained 5 A grades in her A-Levels in Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics/Further Maths and Physics after achieving exceptional GCSE results and completing a 6-year Alimah course in Bolton.

She has been involved with a number of projects including ‘The Analyst Competition’ organised by the Royal Society of Chemistry at Buckingham Palace. Being a part-time mentor for children at a local Mosque, Raihazah also spends much of her time helping her local community, taking part in the Council-led Health Forum which aims to help tackle health issues amongst young people.
Silver Award     Mohammed Saif Sait

A first-year medical student at King’s College, London, Saif achieved 10 A*s in his GCSE’s and 4 A’s at A-Levels in Biology, Chemistry, Maths/Further Maths and Latin at Eltham College, London. Having being recognised with numerous awards during his A-Levels for Biology, Latin, Maths & Statistics, he has also participated in a number of extra-curricular activities.

He is a keen sportsman who has excelled in football, badminton, chess, table tennis and tennis. A passionate cricketer, Saif has been awarded the Bowling Cup award at his school for cricket 2 years in a row. He has also been active in charity work, helping raise money for victims of the 2004 Tsunami and the 2007 Pakistan Earthquake. Saif aspires to contribute positively to his community by being a Doctor.
Bronze Award     Zuhair Moeen Anwar

Lord Sheikh award Zuhair Moeen Anwar the A-Level Bronze Award.
Born in Pakistan, Zuhair moved to London after being diagnosed with a hearing problem from birth. Despite this, he has successfully developed proficiency in communication and lip reading and achieved 4 A*s and 8 A’s at Brondesbury College. He proceeded to achieving 3 As in Biology, Chemistry, History and Maths/Further Maths and 1 B at A-Level whilst studying Biology A-level independently.

In his leisurely time, he is an avid player of Cricket and enjoys drawing. Zuhair is working for mediation services in his local community in addition to teaching Maths to younger children. He has been active in charity work, travelling to the areas affected by the Pakistan Earthquake as part of a medical team. He is currently studying Dentistry at Bart’s and the London School of Medicine and Dentistry.

Zara Hason

A first year student at Imperial College currently reading Environmental Geosciences, Zara attained 5 A’s at A-Levels in Biology, Chemistry, Maths & Further Maths and Geography. Whilst enjoying Netball and Climbing in her free time, she is participating in a local community initiative whereby she volunteers as a classroom assistant in an underprivileged school in order to help ameliorate its standards

At university she has been active as a member of the Islamic Society, helping organise events for Charity Week. Last year, she attended a Presidential Classroom programme in Washington D.C. on ‘Science, Technology and Public Policy’. This one week programme included seminars from distinguished speakers such as senators and renowned scientists as well as engaging in crossfire debates on political issues.
Tanim Zaman

Tanim was born in and spent much of his childhood in Italy, moving to London and joining Seven Kings High School in Year 8 whilst not speaking a word of English. Since then, Tanim has attained 7A*s and 5As at GCSE and was successfully nominated to being 6th Form Head Boy at his school. At A-Level, he acquired 4 As in Maths, Economics, French and Italian.

Outside of academia, Tanim has been active in charity work, raising money for victims of the Gaza War and survivors of the Bangladesh Cyclone. In his community, he has successfully established voluntary tutoring facilities and won a national competition for best ‘Junior Budget, 2009’ with his article being printed in The Times.

Tanim is currently on a gap-year scheme with Deloitte and has been accepted to study Economics at the London School of Economics next year.

Platinum Award     Saad Raja

Shaykh Suhaib Hasan presenting the Degree Platinum Award to Saad Raja.
Following outstanding achievements throughout school and college, Saad graduated from Imperial College London with a First Class Masters degree in Electrical & Electronic Engineering with Management. Saad has taken part in various other activities alongside his academic work, such as assuming the position of Imperial College Islamic Society President; working with Altera Corporation; and the Royal Academy of Engineering. Working as a Strategy Consultant, Saad is also the Founder and Managing Director of Vidstar Ltd., a video recruitment solution. Recently short listed as a finalist for his idea to tackle Climate Change, Crime and Careers, Saad was invited to Number 10 Downing Street where he met the Prime Minster and presented his idea to the Cabinet.
Gold Award     Nausheen Lal

Baroness Pola Uddin presenting the Degree Gold Award to Nausheen Lal.
Nausheen Lal graduated from Cardiff University in 2009 with a First Class Honours in Medical Engineering. She was heavily involved with the Islamic Society during her time there and was also Chair of the Engineering Student-Staff Panel for 2 years.

Nausheen currently teaches at SOBIS (the School of Basic Islamic Studies), a weekly Islamic complimentary school. Last year, she helped launch the SOBIS building project, which aims to build a large, multipurpose centre for Muslims in Cardiff. Nausheen is currently doing her Masters at Glamorgan University, is Vice-Sister of the FOSIS Wales & West Committee, and is also a volunteer for a charity. She regularly produces Islamic calligraphy pieces and is studying Arabic and Tajweed.
Silver Award     Hira Amin

Hira Amin was born and brought up in Kent. She attained all A's and A*s for her GCSE's and 3 A's for her A-levels. At school she also enjoyed many sports and had a particular interest in kickboxing for which she achieved a medal for her achievements.

She went on to study Maths and Mathematical Philosophy at Kings College University of London, where she achieved a 1st Class Honours Degree. She also studied advanced Arabic and Tajweed while completing her degree and subsequently was able to tutor people both for Arabic and Tajweed in her spare time. At present she is working as a Strategy Analyst for a niche marketing company in West London whilst continuing her Islamic Studies with the Al-Kauthar Student's Guild.
Bronze Award     Sami Yusuf Mirza

Sir Iqbal Sacranie OBE presenting the Degree Bronze Award to Sami Yusuf Mirza.
Having achieved a 2:1 in BSc Neuroscience, Sami is presently continuing his medical studies as a 5th year medical student at University College London. Sami achieved 5 A’s at A-Levels. An active sportsman, he has played badminton for UCL and participated in a number of charity football events.

He has also been continuously involved in charity work for a number of years, previously having been awarded the Young Volunteer of the Year Award for his work at an old peoples’ care home. Sami has been a youth worker for the past four years.

Sabah Hussein

Sabah graduated from the University of Gloucestershire with a First Class Honours degree in International Business Management with Psychology. Her final year dissertation was an investigation into the extent to which Muslims have been identified by marketing mangers in the UK, winning EuroDirect’s International CAMEO Award for the best dissertation in the area of population, census analysis and geo-demographic profiling.

Sabah has also been a Scout Leader for the 1st Bristol Muslim Scouts.
