The Report: Is the UK government's CCE Islamophobic?
CAGE, an independent grassroots organisation have recently released a report about the Commission for Countering Extremism in the UK . The report claims that the government backed initiative is Islamophobic. The so called ‘experts’ of the states sponsored scheme have openly criticised Islamic practices such as wearing the hijab, and Sharia arbitration and gender separation. This raises questions about the long term impact the CCE will have on free speech, academic freedom, and the right to privacy through supporting state manipulation of beliefs. The Commission rejects the criticism of its expert group, who it argues are all well-known for their impartiality, their willingness to speak out and their commitment to challenging prejudice. It has made clear that it wants to hear a wide variety of views and is encouraging viewer to contribute to its call for evidence. So, what does this mean for Muslims living in Britain and the wider Muslim community?
