What is the future of Algeria following the resignation of its President?
Good evening, you’re watching The Report with me, John Reese. Algeria’s president Abdel Aziz Bouteflika has submitted his resignation with immediate effect according to state media. Algerians celebrated the resignation of the leader after two decades in power, but vowed to keep protesting to demand sweeping change to the country’s whole political system. Hasni Abidi, director of the Center of studies and research on the Arab and Mediterranean world in Geneva says that after the departure of Algerian President, the army, tasked with “managing the security and stability of the country” and “the political vacuum” faces “great challenges”.
